Hiding vs encrypting: what is the difference
These two words get used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing.
Encryption makes a file unreadable. The file is still there, visible to anyone browsing your storage. But without the right key, its contents are scrambled and cannot be read.
Hiding makes a file invisible or undetectable. The file disappears from plain view. Someone browsing your storage does not see it at all, or sees something ordinary instead.
A locked safe is encryption. A safe hidden behind a painting is hiding. The most private solution does both: hides the file so nobody knows it is there, and encrypts it so even if someone finds it, they cannot read it.

What to look for
Before looking at specific tools, it helps to know what questions to ask.
Does it stay on your device? Any tool that uploads your files to process them is asking you to trust a server you do not control. The best tools process everything locally.

In many ZIP implementations, file names inside the archive are stored in the archive structure and remain visible before the archive is decrypted. The ZIP file itself announces that something is being protected. It does not hide the existence of the protected content.
BitLocker (Windows) and FileVault (macOS) encrypt the entire storage drive. Everything on the device is protected if the device is powered off or the session is locked. They are built into the operating system and require no additional software.
