Is FileVeil Safe?
Before you hide a file inside another file, you want to know one thing: where does it go? The answer is nowhere. It stays exactly where it started. On your device.
Where your files actually go
When a privacy tool asks you to upload a file, your file travels across the internet to a server somewhere. It is processed there. It comes back. At every step of that journey, someone or something other than you has access to it.
FileVeil does not work that way. Hide any file inside another file. That is what FileVeil does, and it happens entirely in your browser, on your device. When you select a cover file and add files to hide inside it, the processing happens locally. Your files never leave your device. The result is downloaded directly to you.
No file data is sent to any server. No file data passes through any network. The only thing FileVeil's servers ever see is the app code itself, delivered to your browser the way any website delivers its code. After that, your files stay with you.
FileVeil processes files using your browser's own computing. Your files are selected, processed, and downloaded entirely on your device. FileVeil has no access to them at any point.
How the encryption works
When you set a key, your hidden files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before being embedded inside the cover file. This is a widely used encryption standard, the same standard used to protect financial transactions, medical records, and government communications around the world.
What this means in practice: even if someone found your cover file and knew it contained hidden content, they could not read what is inside without the correct key. The encryption happens before the files are embedded. The key you set is never stored anywhere by FileVeil.
The cover file itself still opens normally. A photo looks like a photo. A PDF reads like a PDF. The hidden content is invisible and encrypted inside it.
You can hide files without a key. Without one, the hidden content is still invisible inside the cover file. But anyone with FileVeil could extract it. A key ensures that only whoever knows it can read what is inside.
What FileVeil cannot see
FileVeil cannot see your files. Not their names. Not their contents. Not what you chose to hide or where you are sending it. Because the processing happens in your browser, FileVeil never receives any of this information.
This is not a policy. It is how the architecture works. A policy can change. Architecture cannot. FileVeil is built so that the server never has access to your files in the first place.
The key and what happens if you lose it
The key you set is the only way to unlock the hidden content. FileVeil does not store it. There is no recovery option, no reset, no backdoor. If you lose the key, the hidden files cannot be recovered.
This is not a flaw. It is what makes the encryption trustworthy. A system with a backdoor is a system where someone other than you can access your files. FileVeil does not have one.
Write it down and keep it somewhere separate from the cover file. If you lose the key, the hidden files cannot be recovered. Not by you, and not by FileVeil.
Honest limits
No privacy tool is a complete solution on its own. FileVeil is designed to hide files inside other files and keep everything on your device. There are things it does and things it does not do.
FileVeil protects the files you hide. It does not protect the device they are on. If someone has physical access to your unlocked device, they can see your files. FileVeil cannot prevent that.
FileVeil encrypts hidden content when you set a key. Without a key, the content is invisible but not encrypted. For anything sensitive, always set a key.
FileVeil is a browser-based tool. Like any browser-based tool, it depends on the security of the browser and device it runs on. Keeping your device and browser updated is part of staying secure.
