Clear answers to the most common questions about privacy, security, features, and plans. If you can't find what you're looking for, contact us at support@fileveil.com
No. All processing happens entirely on your device, nothing is ever uploaded to any server. If you use an encryption key, your hidden content is locked with AES-256-GCM encryption before files are hidden inside the cover file. Without your key, the content is mathematically unreadable, even to us.
Never. FileVeil has no servers that handle your files. Your encryption key is derived locally in your browser and is never transmitted anywhere. We have no technical ability to access your files or keys, by design.
In standard mode, a careful byte-level analysis could potentially reveal anomalies. With Stealth Mode (Pro+), hidden data is stored inside the file's own structure, making the output indistinguishable from an ordinary file to common inspection tools. The cover file opens, plays, and behaves completely normally.
FileVeil uses AES-256-GCM, the same standard used by governments, financial institutions, and security professionals worldwide. Pro+ users can enable Strong Encryption mode, which uses 300,000 PBKDF2 iterations for key derivation, 3× the standard, making brute-force attacks significantly harder.
We collect only what's necessary to run the service: your email address for account access, and payment details to activate your plan. We only collect essential account information, such as your email and account tier, and we never share your data with third parties except to process payments.
FileVeil itself does not store files or keys between sessions. All processing happens locally in your browser, with files handled in-memory rather than being written directly to disk. However, on shared devices we recommend using a private browsing window and clearing it after use, as your operating system may cache files you work with locally.
Steganography is the art of hiding information inside another file so that the existence of the hidden content is not apparent. Unlike encryption alone, which makes content unreadable but visible, steganography makes the hidden content invisible. FileVeil combines both: your files are hidden and encrypted.
FileVeil supports a wide range of cover file formats: images (JPEG, PNG, WEBP, BMP, GIF, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF), videos (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, WEBM, FLV, WMV), audio (MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG, M4A, OPUS), documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, EPUB), archives (ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2), design files (PSD, AI, FIG, SKETCH, XCF), and system files (EXE, APK, ISO, DMG, DEB). The cover file continues to open and function normally after hiding files inside it.
Virtually any file type: documents, spreadsheets, photos, videos, audio, archives, code files, or anything else. Free and Pro users can hide multiple files of the same type at once. Pro+ users can hide any combination of file types inside a single cover file. Pro and Pro+ users can also hide entire folders in a single operation.
Yes. The output file is fully functional. An image still displays, a video still plays, an audio file still sounds the same. To anyone without FileVeil, it is simply the original file, nothing more.
The output file will be slightly larger, roughly the size of the cover file plus the size of the embedded payload. This is expected and unavoidable. The approximate final size is shown to you before you download.
It depends on how the file is modified. Standard mode appends hidden data to the file; aggressive tools that re-encode or strip trailing data may remove it. Stealth Mode (Pro+) stores hidden data inside the file's own structure, making it more resilient to common edits. For maximum safety, avoid re-encoding or compressing the cover file after hiding files inside it.
Yes. This is the Multi-layer feature, available to Pro+ users. Each layer is independently encrypted and requires its own extraction pass. You can build multiple independent secrets inside the same cover file.
Yes. For best results, send the file as a document or attachment rather than as a photo or media file. Some messaging apps and social platforms automatically compress, convert, or re-encode images, videos, and audio files, which may remove hidden content. To preserve hidden content, send the file without modification and avoid platforms that automatically alter files during transfer.
Offline access is available for Pro and Pro+ users. To use FileVeil offline, you must sign in at least once while connected to the internet. Once signed in, your session is saved on your device so you can continue using FileVeil without an internet connection.
Free gives you 0.2 MB to try the core hide and extract features with AES-256-GCM encryption, no account required. Pro+ goes up to 2 GB and adds every advanced privacy feature: Stealth Mode, Metadata Removal, Strong Encryption, Multi-layer file hiding, camera capture, and the ability to fully restore the cover file to its original state. Yes. Transfer the veiled file to any device, open FileVeil in a browser, and extract. The file format is device-agnostic. If you used an encryption key, you'll need to enter that same key to unlock the content.
Pro and Pro+ users can use FileVeil fully offline after installing it as a PWA. The Free plan requires an internet connection for account verification. File processing itself never requires internet, it's always local.
No account is required for the Free plan. You can try core features immediately as a guest. An account is required for Pro and Pro+ to verify your purchase and maintain access across devices and sessions.
Your account password can be reset at any time via the "Forgot?" link on the sign-in screen, a reset link will be sent to your email. This is separate from your encryption key, which cannot be reset.
There is no recovery for encryption keys. Your key is derived and used locally on your device, it is never stored anywhere by FileVeil. If you lose your encryption key, the hidden content inside that file cannot be unlocked.
